Hundreds of Latina women will gather Saturday to network, learn about growing their small business and discuss the unique challenges they face in their homes and communities at the Minnesota Latina Women’s Expo at Bloomington City Hall. The fifth-annual conference aims to bolster Hispanic women on the state’s business scene.
Another theory is that women are choosing to forgo careers in STEM to attain better work-family balance—rather than being pushed out by bias. Several new studies add to the growing body of evidence that documents the role of gender bias in driving women out of science careers. A 2014 study found that both men and women were twice as likely to hire a man for a job that required math. In our analysis of all US births from 2009 to 2017, we found a significant upward level shift in the number of preterm births among US Latina women that coincided with the 2016 US presidential election. This result appeared most pronounced for infants conceived or in their second trimester of gestation near the time of the election.

Hispanic women were also 30 percent less likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women. Closing the Latina women’s pay gap, Ms. Thomas added, would result in an additional $1 million in earnings over the course of a Latina woman’s career. “The impact it has on spending power for Latinas and their families is tremendous,” she said. That gap is greater than for black women, who earn 39% less than white men, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, and greater than for Native American women, who earn 42% less than white men. None of these policy interventions is a silver bullet on its own, but together they would support greater economic opportunity for Latina workers and all other workers.

Before developing the AMIGAS adaptation, we conducted 3 focus groups with ethnically and culturally diverse Latina women to explore the factors that increased their HIV risks. We collected ethnographic data on their beliefs related to gender and social norms and sexual communication, as well as their knowledge and misconceptions concerning HIV.
In 2011, 788,000 Latinas ran their own businesses, representing a 46% increase from 2006. Comparatively, female business owners as a whole only increased by 20% during this same time period. Of women in the workforce with advanced degrees (master’s, professional, and doctoral degrees), Latinas earn the lowest median weekly earnings of all racial and ethnic groups in the United States.

Non-citizen Latinos often avoid hospitals and clinics for fear of deportation, leading to an increased risk of preventable diseases such as tuberculosis and Hepatitis in this population. Additionally, Latino health deteriorates as this population assimilates into unhealthy lifestyles associated with lower socioeconomic American populations.
